Infants and Toddlers
- A primary concern is neglect due to parent’s:
- failure to build an a emotional attachment with the child
- use of alcohol or drugs to cope with the stress of living with abuse
- inadequate nutrition or sleep deprivation resulting in low energy and inability to focus
- injuries making it difficult to get around
These children may also experience:
- exaggerated startle reflex – extreme reaction to noise or sudden movement
- fear and instability which may inhibit their curiosity, exploration of their world, and play
- inconsolable crying which can also put them at increased risk for child abuse including shaken baby syndrome
- problems with feeding, sleep, and emotional attachment to parents
