Parenting Programs in Alberta

Parenting is hard work. Children do not come with manuals and parents often find themselves figuring things out along the way. Every involved and loving parent hopes to raise respectful, resilient and kind children. The reality of our busy lives can make this journey a difficult one.

Luckily, in Alberta, there are some helpful programs available for parents and caregivers that focus on raising resilient children by learning ways to manage misbehaviors. Parenting programs intend to build confidence and capacity in kids and parents alike.

Positive Parenting Program – Triple P

When it comes to raising kids, everyone has an opinion. There are so many ideas out there. So how do you know what’s best and what works? The Alberta government is taking the guesswork out of parenting, supporting parents and caregivers with the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program.

Triple P gives parents simple tips to help manage the big and small problems of family life. Problems like toddler tantrums or teenage rebellion. Self-esteem issues. Bedtime battles. Disobedience. Aggression. Triple P can help you deal with them all – and more! And Triple P is one of the few parenting programs in the world with evidence to show it works for most families.

Positive Discipline for Everyday Parenting

This innovative and empowering approach to child discipline was developed by Joan Durrant Ph.D. (University of Manitoba) for Save the Children Sweden in 2007. Positive discipline is based on children’s rights to healthy development, protection from violence and participation in their learning. Parents are shown how they can teach their children while respecting their human rights. It is relevant to parents of all children from infancy to adolescence.

Positive Discipline is:

  • Non-violent
  • Respectful
  • Solution-focused
  • Based on child development principles
